THE TURNING POINT

How Kings Mountain Changed World History

The world as we know it today—with its 195 sovereign nations—owes much to the outnumbered 910 Patriot and Frontier militia who defeated British Commander Patrick Ferguson and his 1,125 Loyalists at The Battle of Kings Mountain.

These Militia Men are known by many names: some called Overmountain Men, others as Backwater Men who crossed rivers and streams descending from the high-country homes, and Shirtmen for their billowy long-sleeved shirts.

These men rallied from present day Virginia, Tennessee, North and South Carolina and Georgia, each following the lead of more than a dozen Patriot Captains. These men were mostly strangers living at great distances apart in the Appalachian frontier, but they were unified in their Call to Arms - to never again live under the thumb of British oppression.

Not one of Washington's Continental Army, Officer or Infantry were present at the battle. It would be these mostly Scots, Irish, Welsh and German frontier longhunters who would defeat the world's most feared and well provisioned British army.

These Militia fighters were ordinary civilians with extraordinary resolve, men who possessed no military training, most had never fought in battle, and most would never fight again. But on that glorious day, October 7, 1780, they answered the call of freedom, mustered into a unified army of freedom-fighters, and in 1 hour and 5 minutes of battle, the course of history changed for America, and indeed, the world.

Their improbable victory shattered British plans, ignited new hope for American independence, and triggered a chain of events that reached far beyond the battlefield.

Sir Henry Clinton would later admit that the Battle of Kings Mountain was "the first link in a chain of evils that followed each other in regular succession until they at last ended in the total loss of America."
— Sir Henry Clinton, British Commander

Notably, he named no other Battle. On behalf of Team K4M, thank you for the honor to "Keep These Stories Alive" within this website and for thousands of Amateur Radio Operators participating on-air to commemorate a story too many Americans have never-before-heard.

A fight for Independence so decisive, Thomas Jefferson would put quill to parchment writing:

The Battle of Kings Mountain "was the joyful annunciation of that turn of the tide of success which terminated the Revolutionary War, with the seal of our independence."
— Thomas Jefferson
